Individual differences in voice adaptability are specifically linked to voice perception skill

چکیده
There are remarkable individual differences in the ability to recognise individuals by sound of their voice. Theoretically, this is thought depend on coding accuracy voices a low-dimensional “voice-space”. Here we were interested how adaptive voice identity relates variability skill. In two adaptation experiments explored first whether aftereffect size familiar vocal identities can predict perception and second, effect stems from general auditory skill (e.g. discrimination for tuning tempo). Experiment 1 demonstrated that contrastive sizes predicted ability. 2, replicated finding further established unrelated abilities or adaptability listeners. Our results highlight important functional role expertise suggest human highly specialised distinct

Individual differences in voice quality perception.
Sixteen listeners (10 expert, 6 naive) judged the dissimilarity of pairs of voices drawn from pathological and normal populations. Separate nonmetric multidimensional scaling solutions were calculated for each listener and voice set. The correlations between individual listeners' dissimilarity ratings were low. However, scaling solutions indicated that each subject judged the voices in a reliab...
متن کاملUnderstanding voice perception.
Voices carry large amounts of socially relevant information on persons, much like 'auditory faces'. Following Bruce and Young (1986)'s seminal model of face perception, we propose that the cerebral processing of vocal information is organized in interacting but functionally dissociable pathways for processing the three main types of vocal information: speech, identity, and affect. The predictio...
متن کاملHuman voice perception
We are all voice experts. First and foremost, we can produce and understand speech, and this makes us a unique species. But in addition to speech perception, we routinely extract from voices a wealth of socially-relevant information in what constitutes a more primitive, and probably more universal, non-linguistic mode of communication. Consider the following example: you are sitting in a plane,...
متن کاملAuditory Adaptation in Voice Perception
Perceptual aftereffects following adaptation to simple stimulus attributes (e.g., motion, color) have been studied for hundreds of years. A striking recent discovery was that adaptation also elicits contrastive aftereffects in visual perception of complex stimuli and faces [1-6]. Here, we show for the first time that adaptation to nonlinguistic information in voices elicits systematic auditory ...
متن کاملThinking the voice: neural correlates of voice perception.
The human voice is the carrier of speech, but also an "auditory face" that conveys important affective and identity information. Little is known about the neural bases of our abilities to perceive such paralinguistic information in voice. Results from recent neuroimaging studies suggest that the different types of vocal information could be processed in partially dissociated functional pathways...
